DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING

WHAT IS DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING?

Developmental editing is a type of editing where the editor (me) and the author (you) work closely together to develop a manuscript. It includes but isn’t limited to proofreading, copy editing, reviewing, rewriting, and researching. Everything from the overall concept to the content and presentation is commented on.

WHY WOULD I NEED A DEVELOPMENTAL EDITOR?

A good manuscript isn’t the best until it’s critically analysed and scrutinised for errors. if you’re aiming for a good manuscript, you definitely don’t need a developmental editor but if a best manuscript is what you want, you certainly need a developmental editor. A developmental editor can craft your story into a better one from the already crafted story of yours. They comment on any and all small to big mistakes; even the overlooked misconceptions or inconsistency that may have missed the author’s eyes.

WHY DO I NEED YOU AS MY DEVELOPMENTAL EDITOR?

I’ve been reading and critiquing manuscripts for over two years now. Whether it’s an oxford comma gone wrong or a diminutive plot hole unnoticed, I can pick errors with ease and confidence. I’m a huge enthusiast about using the right literary devices and the right words in the right context; understandably, my editing would include me inspecting your manuscript for malapropism and catachresis among others. Being an eclectic reader, I’ve been exposed to a wide number of genres and have an insight to what works best for a particular sub genre. Whether it’s a literary fiction or a YA contemporary, a fantasy or a non-fiction, I can assure you your manuscript is in the right hands.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM YOUR DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING?

  • A detailed, general feedback on the book. [editorial letter]
  • Extensive commenting on each aspect of the book–plot, pace, characterisation, and dialogues. [margin notes]
  • Proofreading for grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors.
  • Analysing the project for targeted audience or market.
  • Correcting inconsistencies.
  • Providing suggestions and valuable creative input.
  • Rewriting parts according to the suggestions provided. [price increases. contact me for more information.]

Using MS Word’s tracking feature, I will make suggestions for polishing the manuscript by evaluating each page, paragraph, and scene. For example:

  • Pointing out plot holes, inconsistency, and/or derailing from the idea.
  • Suggesting additional scenes, dialogues, or setting to resonate the pacing and heightening tension.
  • Analysing character motivations, development, and personality equilibrium.
  • Pinpointing where conflicts can be deepened or calmed down.
  • Examine the themes being explored and rework arrangement for a better result.

All these can be delivered in a .doc or .pdf file.

In addition to all these, you can expect a consistent communication and constructive honesty.

WHAT WILL YOUR READ?

I’m open to editing any and all fictional works of any and all demographics [middle grade, young adult, new adult, and adult]. My favourites would be science fiction, fantasy, contemporary, literary fiction, realistic fiction, and mystery/thrillers. Since I’m an eclectic reader, I can read and analyse most of the genres so feel free to message me for further clarification.

I will not read non-fiction, erotic, religious/spiritual, and poetry. Coarse language and few sex scenes are absolutely fine.

HOW MUCH WILL YOU CHARGE FOR THIS SERVICE?

My base price is $0.007/word with a minimum word count of 5000 words. If you’re ordering a rewriting service in the package, there would be an additional charge of $0.005/word I write. I also offer discounts on repeat offers or revisions, which can vary but starts at an impressive 25%.

So, for example, you order a 100K word developmental editing [not including rewriting], your first round will cost you $700. After you’ve made the changes in your manuscript according to the suggestions you deemed fit, you can request another round of revision. This time, you will be awarded a minimum of 25% discount which will cost you $525. Since the manuscript is already proofread by me before and the major problems are already pointed out, the cost would decrease even further since I won’t be doing as much work as I did in the first round.

I’m flexible to authors who work on a strict budget so don’t be afraid to contact me for a custom quote.

All payments will be done through Paypal with half the amount being sent before the editing and remaining half after the edits are delivered.

WHAT’S YOUR TURNAROUND RATE?

I work on a schedule so slotting is done according to first come, first serve basis. However, I won’t take more than a month. If you’re on a deadline and would like a faster turnaround, you can request so with an additional charge of (non-negotiable) $50.
